The Amory

The shot of the armory was taken in about 1914. At that time, the armory housed the Golden Post Office.

The Armory was constructed by James H. Gow, a local architect and native of Golden, to house the Company A, Engineers Corps, of the Colorado National Guard.   Gow collected 3330 wagonloads of cobblestones from the Golden area in order to build the Armory.

When it opened, the Armory provided dormitories, parlors, library, mess hall, kitchen, baths, and a spacious drill hall.

This information was taken from The Shining Mountains by Georgianna Brown.  The book contains a more in-depth write-up about the construction of the armory.  The Shining Mountains is currently out of print, but several copies are available at the Golden Public Library.
