The following information was provided by Golden historian Richard Gardner.
Castle Rock, as we call it today, was originally known as Table Rock. Its appearance has been visibly altered since the time of our earliest historic photos due to four documented rockfalls from its face. It originally had a more rounded appearance; historic rockfalls are marked by lightstreaks on Castle Rock's face. Two people have survived falls from this natural monument, one, a woman, was uninjured.
